From the artist:
The image “Suisun City, CA.” is part of an ongoing project to document the marginal communities that exist around the perimeter of San Francisco Bay and along the waterways of the Sacramento-San Joaquin river delta. Suisun City is home to Suisun Marsh, a critical component of the San Francisco Bay-Delta estuary ecosystem. Established during the California gold rush, Suisun City grew to be a major transportation and commercial hub due to its proximity to shipping links, the transcontinental railroad, and agricultural opportunities created by the diking of Suisun Bay shorty after the founding of the city. Increasing salinity and land subsidence caused farms and ranches to fail, while the construction of Interstate 80 and Travis Air Force Base in neighboring Fairfield diverted commerce. In the 1980’s a survey of San Francisco bay area communities listed Suisun City as the least attractive place in the region. Crime and gang activity were prevalent. Today Suisun City is attempting various redevelopment projects. The land and waterways that make up Suisun Marsh are managed collectively by federal and state wildlife agencies, land trusts and over 150 privately owned duck hunting clubs.
