From the artist:
When the Dutch settled this eastern part of Brooklyn in the 17th Century, the Gowanus Creek spread out like fingers into navigable streams filled with natural marshes and marine life. During the 1860s the creek was dredged and converted into a long canal to facilitate commerce that built up along it. Unfortunately, many businesses dumped its waste and the city its sewage into the canal, creating over years a well-known polluted and odorous waterway. In fact, it still is, but now it's on the EPA’s Superfund Priorities List to be rehabilitated.
