From the artist:
“Trap Door” features a truncated view of the magician’s assistant, a tragic figure who appears in different guises in “That Old Black and White Magic.” The glamorous assistant, always female, is frequently placed in perilous situations for the delight of the audience. She is instrumental to the illusions and privy to the mechanics of the tricks, yet she is forever relegated to a subservient position. Bound with string, here she must escape her predicament and fit through a small trap door that might not even exist.
